Licensing

We aim to make licensing both fair and easy to understand. Our licenses are based on a single metric: the number of people in the company or brand using the fonts — including employees, freelancers, and collaborators. This always refers to the end client, not the designer or agency. Simply choose the tier that matches their current team size.

If you’re an individual with a large public reach and the typefaces you purchase are part of your visual identity (e.g. used in merch, banners, videos), we ask that you choose a higher tier or contact us for a custom license. This ensures fairness between solo creators, companies, and institutions.

Licenses cover standard use across print, web, apps, and ebooks. Logo use and broadcasting are available as optional add-ons. If your needs go beyond the largest tier — or if you're interested in design modifications, extended language support, or anything more specific — please get in touch!

To test our fonts directly in your designs, head over to the conveniently named Test fonts page.

And please read our End User License Agreement below before purchasing.

FAQ

LICENSING

Who should own the license, designer or client? Who should do the purchase?

The end-user should own the license, which means whoever the typeface is going to be used for. But you, as a designer or agency, can purchase on behalf or your client — provided they’re ok with it. Just make sure you enter the correct Licensee (your client) during your purchase.

Do I need to upgrade my license if my business grows?

No — as long as you selected the right company size and usage options at the time of purchase, you're all set. You only need to upgrade if you want to add more permissions (like logo use or broadcasting).

My requirements don’t fit anything of the Licensing options, what should I do?

No problem — if your needs go beyond the largest company size or if you're looking for something more specific (like extended usage or custom formats), just get in touch and we’ll craft something that suits you.

Is it possible to test a typeface before purchasing?

Indeed, just download our Test Fonts package! It comes with a limited character set, but should be enough to give you a taste and/or convince your client before a purchase.

Do you offer discounts for students? What about non-profit organisations or charities?

Students may use the Test Fonts for any school-related project. However, these only have a limited character set, so, if you’re a student and you feel like you’d need the full typeface, get in touch!
As for non-profit organisations or charities, that can definitely be arranged, yes! Drop us a mail and tell us about your project / institution.

GENERAL

What is the character set / language support of your typefaces?

All of our typefaces share a minimum standard character set, covering most European Latin-based languages. However, some also have a broader set, including more diacritics (eg. for Vietnamese support) or even other scripts such as Cyrillic or Greek. Make sure you check the Additional Informations section on each typeface’s page, or even better, their PDF specimen!

What font formats do you provide? What if I need a different format, like, say, variable?

You’ll automatically get fonts as OTF (for Desktop use), WOFF and WOFF2 (for web use). If your project requires a specific format, please get in touch and we’ll try and make it happen! Same goes for variable fonts: they’re not directly available through our website but could be provided on request and for the purchase of a full family.

Can I get a refund for my typeface purchase?

Unfortunately, dealing with digital files, it would be too complicated for us to handle refunds and all. So, that’s a no!

I’d like to modify a few things in a typeface I just purchased — is that ok?

Modifying letters as outlined elements in a design software (eg. Inkscape or Adobe Illustrator) is ok. But you’re not allowed to open the typeface in a type design software.
We can do that for you though: tweak the design to better fit your project or expand language coverage with more diacritics, more scripts, you name it!

What about a full custom typeface, from scratch. Is that also a thing?

Most definitely is, as you can see in our Commissions section. We’ve worked with companies, designers and agencies to create bespoke typefaces, from single display cuts to complete families, whatever best fits the project. And it’s something we really enjoy doing, so, let us know if you have even a spark of an idea!

I see a problem with one of your fonts, any chance youll fix it?

We’re not obliged to (you purchase the fonts as is), however we’ll surely try our best, if it sounds reasonable!

End User License Agreement

GENERAL

This End User License Agreement (“Agreement”) is a legal contract between Plain Form (Lucas Descroix, 601 route d’Ampère, 69250, Poleymieux-au-Mont-d’Or, France) and you, the Licensee—defined as the individual, entity, or organisation whose name is specified during the checkout or sale process, and on whose behalf the Fonts will be used.

This Agreement sets out the terms for using the Font Software and the visual design of the Fonts (collectively referred to as “Fonts”). The Fonts include the software and any visual, typographic, bitmap, or outline representations created by or derived from that software.

By installing, accessing, or using the Fonts, the Licensee agrees to the terms of this Agreement without reservation. If the Licensee does not agree to be bound by this Agreement, they must not install, access, or use the Fonts.

Upon full payment of the non-refundable license fee, Plain Form grants the Licensee a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the Fonts according to the terms set out herein. All rights not expressly granted are reserved.

LICENSE TO USE

SCOPE OF USE

This license permits use of the Fonts within your organisation. Fonts are provided in OTF, WOFF, and WOFF2 formats. Unless otherwise specified in this Agreement, you may:

→ Install the Fonts on any number of devices used internally by your organisation;

→ Use the Fonts on any number of websites owned and controlled by your organisation;

→ Embed the Fonts in static documents (e.g. PDFs), ebooks, digital products, applications, and other media created and distributed by your organisation.

Specific limitations for Logo use and TV/Broadcast are defined in their respective sections below.

LICENSE SIZING

The cost of a license is determined by the total number of employees (including temporary staff) at the Licensee’s organisation.

This count is taken at the time of purchase. You do not need to upgrade your license if the number of employees increases over time, unless you require additional permissions such as Logo or Broadcast use.

PURCHASE BY DESIGNER

A Designer (agency, studio, freelancer, or service provider) may purchase a license on behalf of a client, provided that:

→ The Licensee (client) is properly named during checkout;

→ The correct license tier is selected;

→ The Licensee has read and accepted this Agreement;

→ The Licensee has authorised the Designer to act on their behalf.

SUBCONTRACTORS

Subcontractors (third parties working on behalf of the Licensee) may use the Fonts solely in the course of their work for the Licensee, under the following conditions:

→ The Subcontractor must read and agree to this Agreement prior to receiving the Fonts;

→ The Licensee may share copies of the Fonts with their Subcontractors for this purpose;

→ Once the collaboration ends, Subcontractors must delete all copies of the Fonts from their systems;

→ Subcontractors may not use the Fonts for their own work or for any other client.

RESTRICTIONS

The Licensee must take all reasonable steps to prevent unauthorised access to the Fonts. In particular, you may not:

→ Upload the Fonts to public repositories (e.g. GitHub) or any location where unlicensed third parties may download them;

→ Decompile, reverse-engineer, modify, or create derivative works of the Fonts without prior written permission (except for subsetting for web use, or modifying outlines in a graphic editor);

→ Resell, sublicense, rent, distribute, or otherwise transfer the Fonts to third parties;

→ Use the Fonts in connection with NFTs, blockchain projects, or other decentralised platforms without written permission;

→ Use the Fonts on behalf of government agencies, military contractors, or weapons manufacturers without prior written approval;

→ Use the Fonts in any context promoting racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, or similar hate speech;

→ Use the Fonts in tools or services that allow unlicensed users to generate custom text or static assets with the Fonts (e.g. online design tools, print-on-demand platforms).

Plain Form reserves the right to revoke a license if the above conditions are violated. No refunds will be issued in such cases.

TEST LICENSE

Test Fonts are trial versions with a limited character set and reduced OpenType features, provided in OTF format only. A Test License allows:

→ Internal evaluation and previewing of the Fonts;

→ Use in non-commercial, self-initiated work;

→ Use in design proposals submitted to clients (commercial use must be licensed before production);

→ Use by students for academic work (but not for commercial projects);

→ Personal sharing on social media, provided that both the font name and Plain Form are credited.

Modification of Test Fonts or their code is not permitted.

LOGO USE

Logo or logotype use requires a specific license extension. You can add it during purchase or later — just get in touch.

TV / BROADCAST

The Fonts may be used in video and film work distributed online or shown at festivals and in theatres. However, if the Fonts are to be used in content distributed via terrestrial TV or subscription-based/VOD streaming platforms (e.g. Netflix, Hulu), a broadcast license extension is required. You can add it during purchase or later — just get in touch.

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

The Fonts and all intellectual property rights therein remain the sole property of Plain Form. This includes all current and future copyrights, trademarks, and other distinguishing features. No ownership rights are transferred to the Licensee under this Agreement.

CREDITING

While not mandatory, crediting the Fonts and Plain Form is appreciated. Where relevant and appropriate (e.g. in books, films, games, or websites), we encourage:

→ Listing the font name and author(s) in credits sections;

→ Tagging @plain_form when sharing projects on social media.

The Licensee agrees not to remove any credits contained in the Fonts.

IN-USE

Plain Form reserves the right to showcase work using our Fonts in our promotional materials, including website, newsletters, and social media. If you would prefer not to be featured, just let us know.

TERM

This Agreement takes effect upon download or use of the Fonts and remains in effect unless terminated. If the Licensee breaches any term of this Agreement, the license is automatically terminated and all copies of the Fonts must be destroyed.

WARRANTY

The Fonts are provided “as is.” Plain Form makes no warranties regarding performance, suitability, or fitness for a particular purpose. We do not guarantee that the Fonts will function without error or interruption.

If issues arise, Plain Form will make reasonable efforts to provide a fix or replacement. Our liability is strictly limited to the cost of your license.

The Licensee agrees to indemnify and hold Plain Form harmless against any claims, damages, losses, or expenses arising from the use of the Fonts or a violation of this Agreement.

LEGAL

This Agreement is governed by the laws of France. It represents the entire agreement between the parties and supersedes all prior understandings, oral or written.

Any amendments must be made in writing and signed by Plain Form. If any provision is deemed unenforceable, the remainder of the Agreement shall remain valid. Failure by Plain Form to enforce any right does not constitute a waiver.
